#107 I was wondering why the fasting is not done anymore? When I watched the movie, it sounded like the fasting before the diet was very important in preparing the body?

Fasting is still used to initiate diets in select patients however, many pediatric hospitals have chosen not to fast based on two studies that show fasting does not change the outcome of the diet and there can often be more problems such as dehydration or acidosis caused by fasting which may delay the start of the diet. Fasting should not be used in certain metabolic conditions such as PDH. In my experience as a clinical nutritionist initiating the diet in several hundred children, in those who are thin or underweight, ketosis occurs rapidly within 2 days of starting them on the diet (without fasting). Adults take longer to get into ketosis and are often fasted.  Beth
