Full question: Can You explain why you don't loose muscle on a ketogenic diet? And can you actually gain muscle with correct training with such a low percentage of protein in the diet?
Reply: The amount of protien recommended for ketogenic diets is the same as what is recommended by our US Recommended Dietary Allowances through the National Academy of Sciences. The amounts are much lower than what most people eat however so most people think that the ketogenic diet is a low-protein diet but its really an adequate protein diet. The reason that protein is limited is because the additional protein that you eat beyond what your body needs (for making cells or repairing cells) is converted to glucose (sugar) which can impede ketosis.
